Why Bad Bunny is the Most Streamed Artist in 2020

Published

on

There are many names in the music industry that have made themselves known to the public for a number of reasons: their lyrics, beat, and overall style. But for Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny, his claim to fame as the most streamed artist globally on Spotify in 2020 came from his advocacy on raising awareness on social issues such as sexuality, gender, and fashion.

Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, 27, and goes by the stage name Bad Bunny, is using his position in the music industry as well as his platform to challenge the status quo, and confronting the norms surrounding gender, sexuality, and even fashion, that’s deeply rooted in the Latin culture.

He has showcased his ideas through various instances and has become a beacon of light and guidance to the youth all over the world. Just this February, Bad Bunny performed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” wearing a t-shirt with the words [in Spanish] “They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt.”

This was in light of the tragedy involving Alexa Negrón Luciano, a homeless transgender woman who was murdered in Puerto Rico, sparking conversations throughout Latin America.

And in the middle of all this, Bad Bunny used his status to make his stand on the matter known to all the world, raising awareness about the presence of transphobia in society.

Besides making his appearances matter and using the right platforms to get his message across, Bad Bunny also uses the craft and artistry found in music since it has the power to engage people from all walks of life even if it’s meant to deliver strong themes.

During the pandemic, the Puerto Rican artist is focused on creating and distributing high quality music to the public while messaging and acting on social issues to solidiy his authenticity and create deeper connections with his community.
