Saana Koljonen is based out of Denver, Colorado, originally from Finland, Saana moved to in 2019. She started her entrepreneurial career after getting knocked down a couple of times by life. We had the chance to ask her about how she started her journey.
How did you start you career?
First, I was a professional volleyball player and played in France in 2018, lived my dream and was going towards my biggest goal so far: the European Championship Tournament the next summer. Then I got a nasty bacterial infection in my ankle that spread to my bone tissue and it took so many months and surgeries that there was no way to get back to professional sports.
During that time I started working for Extended DISC basically from my bed that does behavioral assessments globally and we created together a tool for sports to improve the self-awareness and self-knowledge of athletes who wish to take the leap to their next level by using their natural strengths and skills.
Then I moved to Denver to coach voluntarily/learn more about coaching volleyball at Colorado University of Boulder while still working remotely to Europe with the tool. I got totally immersed in the consultation and coaching world when I realized that I can combine my knowledge and expertise to create services and content for the athletes, coaches and teams that are helping them to get more aware of their individual personality traits so they can gain more confidence and more effective ways to reach their potential.
When did you decide to take it to the next level?
When Covid hit and all of that work was paused, there were no practices for coaching and Extended DISC also froze their sports department, but I didn’t hit pause. I decided to start my own business and continue on my own.
I knew that struggles were still there and now athletes were also facing a very uncertain periods in their lives with COVID so I wanted to be there and help them to get more certainty about themselves to come out of this period mentally stronger.
What is your cause?
My cause is to drive authentic leadership within the athletes and coaches so they can also cultivate it in others. Why authentic leadership? Because too many athletes never reach their full potential because they feel like they are not enough and/or they try to change or become something they are not. Finding their authenticity and their own, optimal way to succeed is going to make them feel aligned with their paths to excellence.
What is your mission?
My vision is to empower more people who dare to lead themselves and others authentically in the sports world. My mission therefore is to empower athletes, coaches, and teams by behavioral assessments and consultation, and create content for them so they know how to
a) Learn more about themselves
b) Lead courageously
c) Walk towards excellence with authentic confidence, every day.
Have you accomplished any goals?
I launched Sports Capacity Assessment in August 2019 together with Extended DISC.
Got a start up funding for my business idea from Finland. I also started my own company in August 2020. After I achieved a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences of Sports in 2015 I was a professional volleyball player for five years in Germany, France and Finland.
What projects are you working on?
Launching my online course for former athletes/soon to be former athletes on Black Friday as well as increasing the awareness around the Sports Capacity Assessment and my services with the tool that is new in this field.
What does the future hold for you?
My future holds authentic excellence. People who understand more what makes them excellent, and that’s what success means for me.
