American Rapper CJ’s Song Whoopty Lands #21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 2021

Born on January 4, 1997, Christopher Daniel Soriano Jr., professionally known as CJ, is an American rapper and songwriter. He began rapping at 16-years-old, later recording and uploading songs to YouTube and SoundCloud at 19.

In July 2020, he self-released his breakout single called Whoopty which peaked landed at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 2021, as well as the top three in the United Kingdom.

CJ also reached the top of the Billboard Emerging Artists chart, leading him to later sign a record deal with Warner Records and record executive James Cruz’s record label Cruz Control Entertainment.

But what exactly made Whoopty so popular?

The song bears a sample of the hit Indian song, Sanam Re by Arijit Singh and Mithoon, which was officially released on December 22, 2015. CJ’s Whoopty also bears some resemblance to Brooklyn drill, a subgenre of hip-hop that began as a derivative of the drill music scene in Chicago, and signals the departure from the American rappers melodic rapping.

Aside from the two notable elements in the song, CJ was also said to be compared to rapper Pop Smoke, the face of Brooklyn drill, because of the song’s drill sound. The young American rapper later confirmed in an interview with HipHopDX that it was Pop Smoke’s absence that inspired Whoopty.

However, CJ attributes his song’s popularity to the energy emanating from the track as well as its video.

But despite its popularity among the people, there are some criticisms that are also circling around Whoopty.

According to Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre, although the song may be the most popular drill record for the last several months, he finds the entire song unoriginal because of the way it combines the work of two artists, namely Pop Smoke’s production and 22Gz’s lingo.

Piling on the criticism, Tom Breihan of Stereogum had similar comments on the song but he admitted that the song works.
